Key Industries in Breckinridge County
Manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, and raw materials and natural resources continue to play an important role in Breckinridge County’s economy. Together, these sectors reflect the county’s workforce strengths, infrastructure, natural assets, and long-term opportunities for growth.
Manufacturing
Manufacturing is a large part of Breckinridge County’s employment base and an important part of the local economy. Many county residents already work in manufacturing, machining, welding, and other goods-producing jobs, which gives the county a strong foundation to build on.
That foundation is strengthened by the Breckinridge County Area Technology Center, which helps prepare students for high-demand careers through hands-on training in machining, welding, and industrial maintenance.
With employers such as Whitworth Tool and Atlas Machine & Supply already established in the county, the BCATC continues to support the workforce needs of existing industry and the broader manufacturing base in the region.

Healthcare
As one of the county’s largest employers, the healthcare sector plays a central role in both the local economy and quality of life. Breckinridge Health, a locally operated rural hospital, employs more than 290 people and provides a wide range of services beyond emergency care and general surgery.
Recent expansions include an orthopedic program and a partnership with the National Rural Oncology Collaborative to bring cancer support services to the area. The hospital also works closely with local industry and can provide on-site occupational medicine services when needed.
In addition to the hospital, the county is served by multiple primary care clinics, dental offices, an optometrist, behavioral health providers, physical therapy facilities, chiropractors, and a local health department offering immunizations, family planning, and other services. Breckinridge County is also recognized at the state level, ranking #6 in Kentucky for both producers under 34 and farmers with less than 10 years of experience. It is currently the #1 burley tobacco producing county in Kentucky, reflecting the scale and continued importance of agriculture in the region.
Tourism
Rough River Lake is the county’s leading tourism asset, drawing roughly 2 million visitors to the area each year. Visitors come for boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, and other outdoor recreation, while attractions like US 60 Dragway, the Judge Joseph Holt Home, and local events help keep visitor traffic moving throughout the county.
That activity supports restaurants, lodging, shops, and other service-related businesses, making tourism an important part of the local economy. For more information, please visit belonginbreck.com.
